Not All Non-Return Valves Are Equal
The term "non-return valve" covers a wide range of products with very different operating principles, performance characteristics and failure modes. For anyone specifying backflow protection — whether for a residential drainage connection or a municipal sewer network — understanding these differences is essential to selecting a solution that will actually work when it matters.

Traditional Flap Valves
Flap valves — sometimes called tide flaps or duck-bill valves — use a hinged or flexible flap that opens under outflow and closes under backflow pressure. They are one of the oldest backflow prevention technologies and remain widely used on outfall structures and headwalls.
Limitations in drainage applications:
- Slam and water hammer — flap valves close suddenly under backflow pressure, creating hydraulic shock in the pipe that can damage fittings and joints
- Debris fouling — the hinge mechanism and seating face are prone to debris accumulation, particularly in combined sewer applications, which can prevent the valve from fully closing
- Installation constraints — traditional flap valves require headwall mounting or a chamber with sufficient space for the flap to swing open; they cannot be installed in a continuous pipe run
- Corrosion and degradation — cast iron and rubber components in aggressive wastewater environments require regular inspection and replacement
Ball Check Valves
Ball check valves use a buoyant ball that rises to block the pipe inlet under backflow conditions. They are commonly used in smaller domestic drainage systems.
Limitations:
- Limited size range — practical only at smaller diameters; not suitable for larger municipal pipework
- Sealing reliability — the ball relies on a precise seat for an effective seal; wear, deposits or slight misalignment can compromise closure
- Flow restriction — the ball mechanism creates turbulence and head loss in normal flow conditions
Penstock/Sluice Gate Valves
Penstock and sluice gate valves provide positive isolation of pipe flows but require manual or actuated operation — they do not function automatically as non-return devices. While they have their place in network management, they are not suitable as passive backflow prevention.
How WaStop® Is Different
The WaStop® Inline Check Valve uses a flexible elastomeric sleeve as its sealing element. Under normal forward flow, the sleeve opens fully, presenting minimal resistance. When flow reverses, hydraulic pressure collapses the sleeve against the pipe wall, creating a complete, watertight seal.

- Passive, automatic operation is required (no power supply or manual intervention)
- The installation point is within a pipe run rather than at an outfall face
- Minimal ongoing maintenance is a priority
- The application is in a combined or foul sewer where debris loading is significant
- Water hammer risk is a concern due to pipe material or age
